Moharimet School Teacher Named 2026 Teacher of the Year by New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom

DURHAM – Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps and Principal David Goldsmith proudly share that Moharimet School Physical Education Teacher Jessica Whalen was named 2026 Teacher of the Year by New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom.

Agriculture in the Classroom is a state-level recognition program offered in partnership with the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Extension’s 4-H program. Candidates can be nominated by their colleagues or school community members, or self-nominate.

“I am honored and excited to be named a recipient of this award,” said Whalen. “Integrating our pumpkin growing and maple sugaring programs into the curriculum has been a truly rewarding experience. This work reflects the curiosity and dedication of our students and the school’s commitment to innovative, hands-on learning that makes Moharimet such a special place.”

Whalen was this year’s top candidate. Her work integrating maple curriculum across all grade levels, standards, growing pumpkins, and community engagement distinguished her from other candidates.

"We are incredibly proud of Mrs. Whalen for receiving the New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year Award,” said Superintendent Shaps. “She has given our students meaningful connections to New Hampshire's agricultural heritage while strengthening their core academic skills."

This year’s nominees were evaluated against criteria that include their educational background and a description of their work in the classroom.

"Mrs. Whalen brings exceptional creativity and passion to her classroom every single day,” said Principal Goldsmith. “Watching her students' excitement as they tend to pumpkins and learn about maple sugaring shows the power of experiential learning. This award recognizes what we've known all along: Mrs. Whalen is an exceptional educator who truly makes a difference in our school community."
