DURHAM -- The Oyster River Cooperative School District wishes to recognize Durham Police Officer Michael Nicolosi on National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, recognized each year on Feb. 15 by the National Association of School Resource Officers.
A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a full-time law enforcement officer that is trained in school-based, community-oriented policing. The position is one of the most important roles for both police departments and school districts, serving as a liaison between educators and law enforcement, a friendly face, and a helping hand in the community.
Officer Nicolosi has been an active presence at all four Oyster River Cooperative School District schools for four years. Nicolosi is a proud member of the community, being among the District’s biggest Bobcat Boosters.
Other responsibilities of Student Resource Officers include:
- Working with guidance counselors and other student support staff to assist students and to provide services to students involved in situations where referrals to service agencies are necessary
- Assisting in conflict resolution efforts
- Making themselves visible within the school community by attending and participating in school functions
- Giving assembly presentations on school safety, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, and online safety
- Initiating interactions with the students in the classroom and general areas of the school building
- Promoting the profession of police officer and be a positive role model and increase the visibility and accessibility of police to the school community
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have been serving in this position for four years. In this role, I have learned to balance building meaningful relationships and collaborate closely with students, parents, and staff,” said Nicolosi. “Helping Oyster River students grow from childhood to responsible adults sometimes means finding constructive solutions to complex issues. My goal is to continue impacting the Oyster River community positively, just as it has impacted me."
Durham Police Department Chief of Police Rene Kelley said, "SRO Nicolosi excels in his role and exemplifies what it means to be an SRO." Chief Kelley added, "He is wholeheartedly committed to Oyster River students and community, actively engages in school events, policy development, staff training, and fosters strong connections between the police department and school administration. Michael's efforts set a standard for positive SRO-school collaboration that should be emulated nationwide."
