On May 14, 2025, Mast Way School had the honor of welcoming Jacqueline Davies, beloved author of The Lemonade War series, for an inspiring and engaging visit with 3rd and 4th grade students.

Students and staff gathered in the library to hear Ms. Davies speak about her love of storytelling, her writing process, and the inspirations behind her work. She captivated the audience as she described how her own life and family have influenced her stories, and she shared her passion for writing across different genres.

As part of her presentation, Ms. Davies introduced a special recorded message from Karen de la Vega, the illustrator of the brand-new The Lemonade War graphic novel. In the video, Ms. de la Vega demonstrated how she brings stories to life through illustration and explained her creative process as a visual storyteller.

Mast Way School wishes to thank Water Street Bookstore for coordinating and sponsoring the author’s visit.

In an extraordinary show of community support, the Durham-Great Bay Rotary Club generously provided a copy of the new graphic novel for every 3rd and 4th grade student at Mast Way.

Each student received a personally signed book, an exciting and meaningful gift that many began reading before the end of the day.
