Giant Whale Brings Ocean Learning to Life

65-foot inflatable whale

On November 25, 2025, students at Mast Way experienced an unforgettable up-close encounter with marine life when the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation brought their remarkable 65-foot inflatable whale, Ladder, to campus.

The visit perfectly complemented the school's year-long ocean theme – One school, One ocean, Endless possibilities – and gave students a unique opportunity to explore marine biology in an interactive and memorable way. Ladder served as both an educational tool and an awe-inspiring spectacle.

Throughout the day, each student received an in-depth tour of both the interior and exterior of the massive inflatable. Inside Ladder, students walked through a life-sized representation of a humpback whale's anatomy, learning about the creature's skeletal structure, organs, and the incredible adaptations that allow these giants to thrive in ocean environments.

The exterior tour focused on external whale anatomy including distinctive features, feeding behaviors, and the threats these magnificent creatures face in today's oceans. Blue Ocean Society educators engaged students with fascinating facts about whale migration, communication, and conservation efforts.

Thank you to this year’s Theme Team and the Mast Way PTO for helping bring this experience to the students of Mast Way.
