Finding Magic in the Snow: Nature Walks at Our School

Students in snow gear gathered around a tree listening to a woman talk.

Every week, naturalist Catherine Fisher visits Mast Way Elementary School to lead a different fourth grade class on nature walks through the trails that wind along our school property. She encourages students to open their eyes and ears to discover the natural wonders all around them. During this week's walk, we trudged through knee-high snow and found evidence of a woodpecker searching for sap in a tree and tiny mouse tracks where the creature had dragged its tail through the fresh snow. Students learned how birds typically defend their territory through song before resorting to more aggressive behavior. As the sun made the snow sparkle, something magical happened—our normally chatty fourth graders fell into a peaceful silence, completely engrossed in observing the world around them.
