NHIAA Coach Eligibility Requirements
(Required for varsity head coaches, recommended for assistant and volunteer coaches)
In order to be eligible to coach in a NHIAA member school the person must have (CM 5.2016):
A. A current certification in First Aid (May be combined with the CPR/AED course).
- A good option is to complete the on-line portion of the AHA Online Course and hands on portion with the Athletic Trainer: https://elearning.heart.org/course/9

B. A current certification in CPR with AED Certification.

C. Completed a Coaching Principles Course approved by the Coaches Education Committee. Approved list is located on the NHIAA website at: http://www.nhiaa.org/related-links/coaches
D. Completed the NFHS Concussion in Sports Course (free of charge). This course MUST be taken prior to any coaching and current. https://nfhslearn.com
E. Completed the NFHS Heat Illness Course (free of charge). This course MUST be taken prior to any coaching and is a one and done course. https://nfhslearn.com
F. All first year head varsity coaches must attend a rules review within one year of hire. All head varsity coaches in their second year or beyond are required to complete the NHIAA yearly on-line rules update or attend a rules review in person given by their sports specific rules organization. Note: New coaches have one (1) year from date of hire to complete (A, C and F). All other items above are required prior to coaching.
Approved required courses that have a fee will be reimbursed. Please submit the receipts to the athletics department for reimbursement. Submit certificates of completion to the athletics department for our records.
