DURHAM —The Oyster River Cooperative School District (ORCSD) is proud to recognize School Resource Officer (SRO) Sergeant Michael Nicolosi in celebration of National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on Feb. 15.

Sergeant Nicolosi has served the Oyster River community for more than five years, becoming a familiar and trusted presence across the district. Known for building strong relationships with students, families, and staff, he works daily to foster a safe, supportive, and welcoming school environment. Nicolosi’s work includes classroom presentations, conflict‑resolution support, professional development for staff, and ongoing outreach that strengthens positive connections between law enforcement and youth.

“Sergeant Nicolosi goes above and beyond for our students and staff every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps. “His steady presence, genuine kindness, and deep commitment to building trusting relationships make our schools stronger. We are grateful for his partnership and the Town of Durham for the dedicated care shown to Oyster River students.”

In addition to his regular duties, Sergeant Nicolosi frequently engages students in learning about law enforcement, civil rights, safety, and community responsibility. He is a familiar face at school events, activities, and celebrations, and he remains one of the district’s most enthusiastic Bobcat supporters.

Town of Durham Police Department Deputy Chief Jack Dalton said, “Sergeant Nicolosi‘s dedication to our schools and community is truly exceptional. His calming presence is felt by everyone he interacts with, and we consistently hear from parents praising the outstanding work he does each day. We are incredibly grateful for his commitment and professionalism, but even more so for his dedication to being a positive role model for our youth. We feel very fortunate to call Mike one of our own.”

As an SRO, Sergeant Nicolosi plays a vital role in school safety and student well‑being, offering support, guidance, and connection while helping students navigate challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
