Students create chalk messages and drawings around school grounds to celebrate Earth Week.
From April 20–24, Oyster River Middle School (ORMS) celebrated Earth Week. The ORMS Sustainability Club, supervised by Sara O’Brien and Lynn Ellsworth, organized the week’s festivities, centered around caring for our planet.
The week kicked off on Monday with students watching documentaries during their science classes that focused on positive, community-based environmental efforts. Throughout the day, students showed their school spirit by wearing Earth-inspired colors, filling the school with shades of blue and green.
On Tuesday, students took action. Advisory groups planned activities aimed at making a positive impact on the planet. Students created colorful chalk messages on sidewalks around the school, celebrating the Earth and sharing thoughtful reminders. They also rolled up their sleeves to weed garden areas, plant flowers, and pick up litter across the school grounds.
Wednesday focused on reusing everyday materials. During lunch and recess, Sustainability Club members led craft stations featuring creative reuse projects, such as turning plastic bags into friendship bracelets.
Students participated in a book swap in the Learning Commons on Thursday, bringing in books and discovering “new-to-them” reads. Many students wore costumes inspired by their favorite book characters.
The week wrapped up on Friday with a break from screens. Students spent time outdoors, enjoying fresh air and connecting with friends without the use of devices.
Thank you to the ORMS Sustainability Club, Sara O’Brien, and Lynn Ellsworth for organizing an action-packed week of learning, community building, and fun!
