Dear Oyster River Families,
During last night’s School Board meeting, NOVO Studio and Eckman presented an update on Mast Way and Moharimet schools’ proposed expansion and renovation project. The presentation, which includes detailed plans and information on spaces that could be expanded and renovated, is available on our Elementary Project webpage.
The expansion and renovation of our elementary schools represent a thoughtful investment in creating equitable, functional learning environments at both elementary schools. It is the result of a strategic, multi-year process, guided by thorough facilities and program delivery analysis, and an extensive collaboration with teachers, staff and building administrators to understand how our spaces are being used and what improvements are needed to optimize learning and support program delivery.
The plan proposed last night addresses critical needs in both buildings. Perhaps most importantly, this project ensures that students at both schools will have adequate and equitable learning opportunities, and flexible spaces that can adapt to future educational needs.
Throughout this process, our team has worked diligently to find cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality. The construction timeline is designed to minimize disruption to instruction, with major work scheduled during summer months when school is not in session.
Our guaranteed maximum price (GMP) of $9,827,000. This figure represents the total project cost, which cannot be exceeded.
We are currently collaborating with our municipal partners to determine the estimated tax rate impact for each town, and I will share this information with you as soon as it is finalized.
Our commitment to open and timely communication remains a priority. In the coming months, we will provide multiple opportunities for you to visit both schools and participate in community discussions to share your feedback and questions about this important project.
I look forward to engaging with you in these important conversations.
Respectfully,
Dr. Robert Shaps
Superintendent of Schools
