Music

The curriculum of the Oyster River High School Music Department is built on the philosophy of providing a comprehensive program for the involvement of persons of all ages in learning music. It is designed to advance the teaching of music of all periods, styles, forms, and cultures. The curriculum offered provides the opportunity for every student at ORHS, no matter what his/her musical background, to select an offering at his/her particular level of musical knowledge.

Music performance competencies:

  • Technique: Students will hold their instruments and sing with proper technique.
  • Literacy: Students will read notes, rhythm, and symbols at grade level.
  • Connection: Students will perform appropriately as an ensemble member, connect with music and speak appropriately about music using age appropriate vocabulary.

Music electives competencies:

  • Literacy: Students will read and analyze music proficiently.        
  • Creation: Students will create music while following a set of guidelines.
